Program 1 – Trauma Coaching

One of Eileen’s roles, as a personal injury lawyer for over 25 years was to assist clients obtain monetary compensation arising from trauma events. She observed clients with significant injuries, struggling to come to terms with their life after an accident or trauma event. Witnessing that it was not only the client who suffered but the whole family too. Life can change for an individual in a split second; they may have left the house that morning physically and mentally fit only to return being the victim of another individual’s negligence, abuse of power or terrorism. The survivor of trauma is then caught up in a web of lawyers, courts, debt problems, depression and pain, which aggravates the original trauma that they had experienced.

Although GP’s are empathetic they do not have the time to spend with clients, who require considerable help and support. There have been changes over the past 30 years and Counselling services are now made available in GP practices but waiting lists for Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or EMDR can be extensive. When Eileen referred clients for treatment many told her they often felt worse or if there has been some improvement that many of the issues they were still struggling with had not been resolved.

It was when Eileen commenced her Masters in Business Administration in 2000 at Westminster Business School (London) that she heard others students speak about ‘Coaching’. After undertaking research; she began to see the benefits of coaching in the area of trauma rehabilitation. Following the completion of her masters; she decided to enrol on a coaching programme to become an accredited life coach. She was aware from studying coaching at that time that techniques were used predominantly in the sporting and business world. John Whitmore, the author of ‘Coaching for Performance’ said that ‘Coaching focuses on future possibilities, not past mistakes.’ Whereas, Cheryl Richardson had said that ‘Coaching is not about processing your emotional history or diagnosing and treating mental health issues. Coaching is action oriented, with a focus on the client’s current life and plans for the future.’

Eileen believed that coaching could be a useful tool in the area of mental health where emotional issues could be addressed once a safe environment was created. Her frustration with treatment available to clients continued especially after reading psychiatric report after psychiatric report concluding a negative outcome whilst acting for the Irish survivors of childhood abuse. She kept digging to find solutions to what could bring some positivity to a survivor. At a book store at Dublin Airport in 2004; she was drawn to buying a book titled, Healing without Freud or Prozac.’ The author, Dr David Servan-Schreiber (now deceased); a psychiatrist and neuroscientist had looked at seven highly effective treatments that work through the body to tap into the emotional brain’s self-healing process. He explained that the emotional brain controls everything that governs one’s psychological well-being, as well as what governs a large part of the body’s physiology such as the immune system, digestive system, the heart and blood pressure. The primary task of treatment was to ‘reprogram’ the emotional brain so that it adapted to the present instead of continuing to react to past experiences.

Following research, Eileen expanded her ideas into bespoke treatment programs because her number one goal was to help clients move forward from the trauma event/incident. She found that by adding Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnotherapy techniques to her knowledge base that this opened up a treatment session to achieve this goal. Eileen takes her work in this area very seriously because clients can be easily triggered and struggle during a treatment program when they may become overwhelmed. She has had to support clients as a lawyer, when they have been undergoing treatment. Although it may feel unconventional to some, her preference, when working with trauma survivors is to seek assistance and guidance through the angelic realm. She believes that through spiritual guidance that the core issues that a client is struggling with are identified early on. Once the dense energy emanating from the core issue is cleared a client can transform. Eileen calls this process the Heart process based on the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly.

What can you expect in a 4 or 8 program session (excluding Earth Star to Soul Star Program)?
